What is a Local Councillor?

A Local Councillor is your representative within the council. Haringey is divided up into nineteen ‘wards’ or areas. These wards are:
Alexandra, Bounds Green, Bruce Grove, Crouch End, Fortis Green, Harringay, Highgate, Hornsey, Muswell Hill, Noel Park, Northumberland Park,  St.Ann’s,  Seven Sisters, Stroud Green, Tottenham Green, Tottenham Hale, West Green, White Hart Lane, and Woodside.

Each ward has three representatives on the council – these people are known as ‘Local Councillors’ or ‘Ward Councillors’. When you vote in the local elections you don’t just vote for one person – you can vote for up to three people who you think will represent your ward best. Local councillors are usually members of political parties.

What do Local Councillors do?

The job of a local Councillor is to represent and act in the interests of everyone who lives in their ward. They are part of the council, attend council meetings and help make decisions about a huge range of things that affect all of our daily lives in Haringey.

Ward councillors can give you help and advice about  a wide range things - particularly matters which are the responsibility of Haringey Council.  You can contact your local ward councillors and speak to them about issues, concerns or ideas you have about your local area. If they cannot help with your question they are often able to give advice about who you should go to for help.

How do I know who my local councillors are, and how to contact them?

You can find a list of all Haringey’s prospective local Councillors here. Inharingey will publish the names of all the new councillors and their contact details after the elections. Names and contact details of all the current local councillors are available at all Haringey’s libraries, and on the council’s website. You can contact your local councillor by emailing them, writing to them, telephoning them, or visiting them at their regular surgeries. Local Councillors want and need to know what is going on in their ward - they are there for YOU.

Why let these three have your say? That's what happens when you don't vote.
Voter turnout in Haringey is traditionally very low – just 35% in the last local elections.
