What is a General Election?

General elections must be held at least once every 5 years. The Prime minister usually decides when the general election will be held. There is a local elections on May 6th 2010 - – the same day as Haringey’s local elections.
General Elections are held to elect MP's. TAfter the election the leader of the party with the most MP's (or Parliamentary ‘seats’) becomes the Prime Minister. There are 650 parliamentary seats. The Prime Minister then decides which of the MP's will form the government.
In order for a party to win an outright majority in a general election they must have the most MP's (ie, win the most ‘seats’), and they must also win more seats than all the other parties added together. If they do not win more seats than all the other parties added together there is a ‘hung parliament’. The difference between the number of seats the winning party has and all the other seats added together gives you the government majority.

How do I vote in the General Election ?

Firstly make sure your name is on the electoral register. Shortly before the local elections you will receive a ‘polling card’ through the post. This will give you information about where to go to vote, and the times you can vote at. Voting takes place in ‘polling stations’ across the borough, and many public building are used as polling stations on election days. You must go to the polling station named on your polling card, which will be close to your home - you can't just turn up to vote at any polling station! It is helpful if you can take your polling card with you when you go to vote, but you don't have to.

How many people am I voting for in a General Election?

You are voting for one person, as there is one MP for each constituency. You write a cross on the ballot paper next to the name of the candidate you wish to vote for. In a general election you must not vote for more than one candidate or your vote will not be counted.

Where do I go to vote?

You make your vote at a Polling Station. The voting card you will receive will indicate the exact address of the polling station you will have to go to. It will be located near to where you live.

Why let these three have your say? That's what happens when you don't vote.
Voter turnout in Haringey is traditionally very low – just 35% in the last local elections.
